I have been a smoker for 10+ years now. I enjoyed a good smoke. Now I am about middle age, have a kid and need to quit. I am sitting at work with a patch on my arm and finger dug into this desk as I nic fit. What a horrid addiction this is.

Ladies and gentlemen, in my life I have done all sorts of addictive drugs and walked away. But this... This evil that has its fingers wraped around me.

I find myself cutting deals with myself. (Well I will just buy one pack, I have been so good I deserve a treat.) or (Just one won't hurt). I have not given into any of these thoughts because I have been here befor.

I know some of you in here will post something inteligent like... Screw it, why quit. Or You got to die sometime.


Here is a thought. We sit in here talking about how awful the RIAA is or the MPAA

But think of this. Some fat old white guy is making money off of your slow death. Think about it. These things are like leagle crack. You get addicted, get a fatal disease(cancer, Emphysema, and who knows what else). You die a painful death while you mother or children watch, and Joe CEO gets a 15 million dollar bonus.

Not it isn't quite his fault. I mean I was an idiot for smoking in the first place. To want to inhale smoke is stupid. People die from smoke inhalation and some of us chose to do this. <img border="0" alt="[knock]" title="" src="graemlins/knock.gif" /> Yea that was smart...

Anyway, To any of you not smoking do yourself a favor, never start. I can't walk up 3 flights of stairs without getting winded and light headed. Wish me luck and save the "keep smoking comments please".

ill give you the exact opposite of a "keep smoking" comment. Quiting is a good thing. I have known a few people that tried to quit. The one that did succeed went cold turkey; no patchs, nothing with nicotine in it. Anyway i wish you luck.

Last smoke I had was at 04:30 01/02/2003. It is 21:00 and I still have not had one. This is so stupid, but I did buy a pack. It is in my pocket. But once I left the store I decided not to light up but hold on to the pack.

The test will be on the drive home....

Sin_tax remember, atleast it's not crack... but on a side note, cold turkey quitting usually doesn't work. Like in my family my Grandfather has emhazima, broncitis, and two types of asthma (I know I spelled all those wrong and I doubt spell check can handle that) and it took a near fatal heart attack to get him to stop smoking.... Thats what usually works, medical emergancies... horribly enough.

Man Sin_tax, I congradulate you for deciding to quit, but if you keep fighting the cravings they will go away. I have been there before, I smoked since i was 12 and heavily (Yeah I know). Since my son was born I decided to quit. For what seemed ever I went through exactly that, but I did not give into the cravings. I had the worst headache for about a week and a half after I had quit, after that was gone. I better than I have in a very long time. and I was very happy that I did not give in.

good job on ur decition to quite. when i was 4 my mom quite cold turkey and she's the reason why i never started so it's great for ur children. unfortunetly thanks to my fathers and my step-mom's second hand smoke when we moved out here and moved into a non-smoking house i nicked for about a year or 2 before i gave in and smoked about 2 months. it felt so friggen good to light up and inhale what i had been missing. good thing i know self control. it has now been 14 months since i lit up. keep going. i wne t cold turkey and got real lucky. <img border="0" alt="[thumb]" title="" src="graemlins/thumb.gif" />

Actually nicotine is proved to be more addictive than herion. It is just in such small quantities in cigarattes that you won't OD or really even notice. If you actually consumed the same amount of nicotine thats in a herion injection, you would die. Once you've started to smoke for a lengthy period of time, they tobacco companies have you. This is part of the wonderful things you learn in drug counceling. I've quit everything for the most part except smoking (and drinking). I have the occasional drink socially, but no where like it used to be. I can go a week with out smoking but as soon as I go out on the weekend I crave a smoke, social habits are harder to break the physical. I really feel you pain man. Especially when i working I really want a smoke on break, but it can be done, you really dont start going through withdrawls until about 5 days to a week after your last smoke depending on your body type. Stop using your smokes as a security blanket take that full pack and give it to a co-worker or someone else you know that smokes don't even have it around, try to make it completely inconvient for you to smoke, get rid of all your lighters, ashtrays, and do not smoke indoors. Thats all the advice and sympathy I can give, tell me if it works out for you.

well Sin_Tax, it's good that you're quitting. i still smoke. i don't plan on stopping til i'm good and ready. but you clearly are ready. i'm happy for you! your kid wil appreciate it too laugh what a good daddy!

jus kiddin. yo i used to be a big-time weed head an i quit a few months ago. its tuff in the begining but after like a week or 2 you should be ok. try cold turkey...go to the gym or whatever ull be ok. good luck

The only reason I quoted was to show relevance, I know when most people use quotes it's to talk trash about what the person was saying, but that isn't the case here fleshy. I know he said crack. I was trying to show that nicotine should be viewed on the same level as crack and herion since it's addictive stregth is comparable.

I smoke a pack a week, that's about 3 smokes a day(-1) and I still think I need to quit.

Drink Orange Juice. Lots of it. I also quit (about a year ago) after over 10 years of a pack a day. For me it was cold turkey.

Nicotine stays in your system stays in your system for 3 days. So after the first 3 FULL days your system is clean. However its the head that [censored] you up.

Think about it. The average person smokes 10 drags of each cig. A pack a day habit means you are purposefully putting your hand to your mouth to smoke 200 times. That is every day. Perhaps the only other thing you do so repetitevely is blinking your eyes.

Buckle up, white knuckle it if you have to. Just get through the first 3 days. Good luck!

have you tried the gum? I've heard it's good [censored]...so I dunno, keep the patch and when it gets bad pop in some gum. what do i know though, i'm working on getting addicted

I have to say Kudos to you. My husband PROMISED me he would quit before we got married. Going on two years now, and he still hasn't no amtter how much I complain about it and bring up the fact that he promised.

In March my father in law was diagnosed with lung cancer. We burried him in August. It's terrible to watch someone die like that. All for what, a cigarette?

My father quit smoking and said he can breathe so much better now, he said it's amazing the difference.

I know a lot of people but those little dum dum suckers and keep those in their mouth pretty much constantly. I've heard that helps because you've got something in your mouth.

I don't smoke and never have, so maybe it's hard for me to understand what you're going through. I just wanted to say good for you, and be strong. I think you'll find that it will be worth it in the end.
