Microsoft gives it's word to come out with an OS that is virus free, with both hardware and software security for authentication and encryption. Does anyone have any idea, what kind of measures we've got to think of because MS is saying it is hacker proof?

If that's what M$ is claiming, then they're not claiming to make it "hacker proof." I don't think that'll ever happen. Not in my lifetime anyway. There will always be poeple who can get around whatever security measures there are if they are motivated to do so.
As for virus free, I seriously doubt that too. There a number of problems with that. Where are you getting this from?

I remember something about all the files on the computer would have some kind of authentication signature or something which would make viruses stand out rather obviously to the OS.

by no means are my facts straight - just throwing that out there as a hint of a possible solution to being truly "virus-free"

Oooohh, that. I heard something about that. I think it's a bad idea what they want to do though. It means everyone who wants to write programs will have to get a signiture. It's too much of a hassle to get all your programs authenticated before they'll run. It seems like a very bad idea.

Got it from the UGN news section.
Windows Palladium

Maybe this approach will work for major banks and hospitals, but sertainly not for the common user.

My god people read the news? hehe...

The site is: http://www.techtv.com/news/security/story/0,24195,3389326,00.html

its not generally a good idea to link directly to the main page since the news is updated every 10 stories.

Bill Gates has said security is Microsoft's No. 1 priority.
Since when?
Quote:
Creators of the company's future operating system took their president and chief software architect seriously.
Really? No-one else is!
Quote:
As "Tech Live" reports tonight, Palladium is the code name of Microsoft's new OS, which promises to end viruses, stop spam, thwart key logging, and safeguard your private data.
End viruses, yeah, right. Stop spam?! How do they plan to do that? Who determines what's spam? M$ or the user? If M$, that would piss a lot of people off. If the user, then it's not going to stop spam. Slow it maybe. Thwart keylogging? Maybe. For a short while. Safeguard private data? Right.
Quote:
In an interview granted to Newsweek, Microsoft project managers and hardware partners sound giddy with excitement over the new OS.
Nah, they're just jizzing (gizzing wink ) at the thought of all the money they're going to make with claims like these.
Quote:
Because Palladium is such a radical departure from previous Windows operating systems, Microsoft has enlisted processor manufacturers to alter their technical designs. Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) have signed on to produce special security chips that power the new locked-down OS.
So only M$ can get in your computer! wink
Quote:
Data flowing from the processor to the monitor will be encrypted. This foils a practice called "van Eck phreaking" -- highly technical, cloak-and-dagger eavesdropping of computer activity that picks up the electromagnetic radiation emitted by a monitor.
TEMPEST? If people have the ability to use TEMPEST technology (like NSA & stuff), you think a little encryption will stop them? They'll just find a way to modify the technology so that the encryption doesn't matter. I'm sure they already have ways to remotely monitor your screen that can get around this encryption.
Quote:
Palladium's hardware and software security innovations center on authentication and encryption: Making sure users are who they say they are and preventing unauthorized code from running on the computer. Palladium prevents malicious worms from running.
And how are we going about getting code authorized? Sounds like a major pain in the [censored] for programmers other than those at M$.
Quote:
Microsoft expects financial institutions, health-care providers, and government agencies to serve as early adopters of the OS.
Ah, their plans for world domination are falling into place! wink
Quote:
As a side benefit for Microsoft and for corporate America, the OS has tight control over copyright media. According to the Newsweek article, Microsoft sees this as a way to bridge the gap between locked-down media and open media. Microsoft doesn't want to stop consumers' fair use of media, such as making backup copies of CDs and transferring songs to an MP3 player, so Palladium will authenticate that you actually bought the music and have a right to rip it for your own use.
And do they think poeple won't bypass this "protection"? I'm sure they'll spend millions on it only to be foiled by something stupid. Just like Sony and that black marker... laugh

There is a program for linux called Win4Lin, it'll boot and run windows in a small window smile , its quite nice, and very sexy...

the ONLY catch is that I don't think its free... but well worth it if you'd like to purchase it... or aquire it lol... In fact it costs $89.99 but is a quick download on your linux machine...

If you decide to purchase its $89.99 and you can either get a download or a boxed set, i'd definetely go with the boxed set...

i dont think i would upgrade to newer versions of windows, sounds like policeware... they wanna catch piraters (like me, i dont pay for [censored] besides hardware). they keep coming out with [censored] OSes. ME was a joke and XP is a memory hog and slow tho i havent had "to" many errors with it nothing in the windows selection compares to 2k for its reliability or 98se for its great game play... my opinion that is.

XP is a resource hog till you tweak it... My resources are steady at 75%...

but when I setup Win 4 Lin I didn't recieve too many errors, jsut standard windows [censored] since its just like running windows, only a bluescreen is just in a little window...
