Italian Police, with FBI help, have failed to break the encryption on at least two Psion PDA's seized from the Red Brigade terrorist organisation. The systems are protected by Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) security software.
The PDAs are believed to hold invaluable information about the Red Brigade which has just resumed its activity of political assassination after several years of non activity. It was particularly active in the 1970s and 1980s.
The developer of PGP, Phil Zimmerman, said that there was no way the manufactures could help as PGP has no backdoor. The software was developed to protect individuals against oppressive governments and that the human rights gains outweigh the cons.
