Researchers from countries such as Britain, the U.S., Japan and Germany want 3 billion to prove the existence of the Higgs boson, otherwise known as the God particle. The theorized subatomic particle could hold the answer to ... everything.

The controversial theorized particle is supposed to explain why physics works the way it does. Some physicists theorize that Higgs borons give matter its mass. They want to build a supercollider to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang.

The collider could "hopefully reveal new and exciting physics, addressing ... questions about dark matter and dark energy, the existence of extra dimensions and the fundamental nature of matter, energy, space and time," a U.K. scientist said.
