i don't think you were ever allowed to "dub" a cd or tape that you bought and give it to your friends. its just that the riaa couldn't determine who was doing that. now that its online, they can see who is sharing music.

Rather than determining who was doing it, it wasn't being done so commonly and easily on such a large scale. It is and has always been against the law, and you are a criminal for doing it. However, with this much of a loss, they decided it is worth taking the proper steps to finally enforce it.

My question is, not sure of the details, but when the FTC ruled the RIAA was price fixing, how much and how long? Plus, we all know how bloated companies and governments like to make their figures. Chances are with the pirates creating loss of sales, the RIAA would still owe us money if we factored in the price fixing.

I believe there would be grounds to have a class action suit if you can prove you spent significant amount of money on music when the price fixing was going on (always?). I am also looking into, for an interesting paper, ways that the RIAA may be a terrorist organization (legally). So hopefully someone will give them the "whatfor" soon.

BTW, Here Is The Link from the Federal Trade Commission for the latest ruling on price fixing in recording industry. This isn't the only one, and I am still looking on their site (so straight from horses mouth) for the one for $480 million.
