The London based company TriStem has claimed it can take normal white blood cells and revert them to stem cells. The claims from the company are not new, but they have recently conducted the experiments with independent researchers in the US.
"I was extremely sceptical," said US team member Tim McCaffrey, a cardiovascular researcher at George Washington University in Washington DC,. "They did it in front of my eyes with my own blood. It's stunning."
TriStem converted the blood cells into blood producing stem cells found in bone marrow. These were then injected into mice. The stem cells went on to produce all types of blood cells. The work will be published in January.
