Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said today that the US may need to draft people into military service to help stabilize the situation in Iraq. He asks: "Why shouldn't we ask all of our citizens to bear some responsibility and pay some price?"

Hagel also notes "Those who are serving today and dying today are the middle class and lower middle class." He thinks a draft would bring members of other socioeconomic groups into the fray. The draft was last utilized in the early 1970s.

Things are so tight that 20,000 soldiers are getting extended stays in Iraq. There is criticism that the Bush Administration did not use enough troops to conduct the invasion. Some want more of an international force to take the burden off the US
