Microsoft Plot to Cripple Real Uncovered

The nine states which have so far refused to settle an antitrust lawsuit against software giant Microsoft have claimed proof that Microsoft tried to use the same tactic that helped it to conquer the browser market against rival Real.

According to a memo from 1999, one Microsoft executive recommended that Microsoft "reposition streaming media battle from Netshow vs. Real to Windows vs. Real" and "follow the (Internet Explorer) strategy wherever appropriate."

This seems to counter previous Microsoft testimony that they never intended to use their dominance in the operating system market to overwhelm competitors in other areas (like Real's multimedia focus).
