Brian Maxwell, who founded the multimillion-dollar PowerBar company and was once a top marathon runner, died Friday (March 19) of a heart attack at the age of 51.

He collapsed at a post office and 911 responders were unable to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at a California hospital.

He and his wife founded the PowerBar company in 1986 after he was forced to drop out of a marathon at the 21-mile mark, the point experts say that the body begins to burn its own muscle tissue.
