City officials in Philadelphia are considering a US$10 million plan that would see the entire city geared up to offer a wireless internet connection. Should it go ahead, the city would become the worlds largest WLAN hot spot.

The city will place transmitters all around the city, most likely on lamp posts, and the service will either be free, or a lot cheaper than the price charged by ISPs between US$35 and US$60.

Philadelphias chief information officer, Dianah Neff said: If you're out on your front porch with a laptop, you could dial in, register at no charge, and be able to access a high speed connection. It's a technology whose time is here.
