Over the last three months, the Chinese government has closed 16,000 internet cafes, following a campaign in the country aimed at protecting children and adolescents from corrosive influences. The closures have been reported by state media.

The reports show that drive holds a lot more influence that was initially thought. Last month, the Xinuha news agency reported that almost 9,000 cafes had been closed since February. All of them were unlicensed.

The campaign to protect the country's youth is not just limited to the Internet. TV stations have also been targeted, with campaign organisers ordering them to air "healthier" content to young viewers.
