A bill in the US senate called the Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act is directed towards "whoever intentionally induces any violation" of copyrights. The bill would overturn the April 2003 ruling which said Grokster was legal to operate.
Critics say that the bill is too broadly worded and that it could do more than ban P2P networks. They say consumer electronics devices such as Tivo and iPods could be affected because some users use those devices to copy things for free.
Critics say the 1984 "Betamax" lawsuit which allowed people to record programs on VCRs could be overturned by this law. Major members of both political parties are backing this law which proponents say is directed towards piracy not devices.
