Nintendo has announced it will be launching an online news service, the Wii News Channel, featuring news articles from the Associated Press accompanied by photos. The Wii News Channel will be launched by the company this weekend.

The user will have to have their console hooked up to a broadband Internet connection and run the Opera browser to access the channel. Nintendo currently has no plans to offer advertising space on the new service.

The AP has a two-year contract with Nintendo and AP's Jane Seagrave said: "It's a very innovative new application of what we're doing generally, which is to try to get our content to new audiences on new platforms."
