I am very interested in any operating system other than Windows. I have a little experience with Linux from working on the school server and i was hoping that someone here could tell me which linux operating system is best for home use.

personally, i think that Mandrake and BSD are the best Linux distro's. they're easy to use and you kan put a lot of different kernals on them to make them look differently.

I think Mandrake is [censored], and BSD isn't linux :p Everytime I help someone who uses mandrake it turns out to be a complete headache. IMHO Mandrake should be blown up and erased from the annals of history forever.

I got my start with redhat, but that's gone now. I currently use Gentoo, and swear by it. However if you're not very familiar with linux then you may not want to use Gentoo. Slackware is a solid distro, but again not the easiest to start out with. I think if I was you, just starting out, I'd go with SuSE. It's a good solid distro that is fairly user friendly, and is also poised to replace Redhat as the most popular distro. Might as well try to be ahead of the game ;0o

Mandrake, from Redhat, both rpm, I just woke, but I hate them both, they verge to close to microshit, commercialism in the open source. [censored] um. Gentoo I really don't like, just as I don't like picobsd, or stormix, o/s's that look to fail, and really are just copies. Slackware is my linux choice, bell labs unix is my unice, another unix variant would be sun solaris, Open or Net BSD is another nice variant, Free I don't like myself.

Recently acquired by Novell, SuSE Linux will probably best suit your needs. It is probably the best out of all the powerhouse distros now that redhat is debunked. It has the best hardware support I've seen out of any distro.

I used FreeBSD for a while... then decided to go with Linux = ).

The only thing i love about FreeBSD is its ports options. Makes installing programs faster.

I understand that freeBSD is not linux, however, it has the same capabilitys (More or Less) as linux. Which is why they are grouped together lot of the time. Also why people get confused that BSD is not linux.
