I have been wondering for a little while now, can our brains change how were see or hear or feel things? Could our brains let us only "see" a certain color range, or could we make things louder or "zoom in" on things? I don't mean the way our eyes do, but since we don't see in pixels that it should be able to make things bigger and in detail, to me. It just seems like since our brains interpret things that our eyes or ears and whatnot tells it, that it could change it in a way that seems real. This is the kinda question I would like to hear the opinions of SR and Learner on..find out how much sense this makes.

absolutely. In terms of sight and pixels... Our eyes are like the scanner or camera. It takes a snapshot of the surroundings and sends it to the brain. If we had the capability, the brain would be able to zoom in on something - but it doesn't necessarily make it more clear. It's just like taking an image and zooming in on a spot of the picture. You don't see any more detail than you did before. The 'pixels' just get larger. The only way for our brains to see images more clearly is if we got closer to the object, or our eyes took a better quality picture. Our brains are not 'programmed' to filter out colors, but that is something the brain could do. The brain customizes a lot of things. For example, an eskimo could go outside on a snowy day here in AR and not feel nearly as cold as somebody from the equator. Part of the reason is a body more suited to keeping themselves warm - but it is also cause the brain is accustomed to colder temperatures than what the eskimo is feeling. Another example is pain. Many times the brain filters out pain messages when it needs to. The brain can discard or pay special attention to any particular aspect of a sense.

Let me put it like this... ColdSunn go do some crystal meth and YOU tell ME if your brain can "change how were see or hear or feel things".

Now your question seems kinda dumb doesn't it? laugh

The brian is quite capable of changing how we sense our suroundings. Look at people who are schysophrenic(slaughtered that on didn't I) Or on LSD your senses are all out of wack. You might see a small object as very large or see something not even there.

To put it on another scale. Rember how big the slide on the playground was in elementry school? Ever go back to that slide? Not quite as big. Humans are different from computers in that many times we interpret things with emotion.

This may change the whole way we view something. Ever heard the expression beauty in in the eye of the beholder? If you love someone you might not "see" pimples all over their face. I mean you literaly might block out all imperfections.

Every think you saw something in the dark? Yes there are many things the mind can do with our sense. Trick is to harness it and controll it.

have you ever thought about the fact that as people we cannot compare what our brains and senses tell us. what i mean is that what i consider the color blue, could appear as the color i think of as orange to you. there would be no way to know, because each person would look at the item and say "that is blue" however, each of us could be seeing a different color. and what i consider a dark color could really be a light color to you. we would have no way of knowing......

I get what he's saying, but its more likley that everyone see's blue as the same thing you know? if they didnt wouldnt there be some minor differences in everyones eye structure(other than retna pattern)and what was that blue's guy Ray Charles he's blind but his blindness is odd he saw his brother drown and that was the last thing he saw, the doctors think that the image was too much emotionally and the brain just turned of the sense of vision(or somthing like that)now i would say that qualifies as the brain having some kind of deeper control on the senses then we can control

your not understanding moffesto, we could both look at the same car, and it would be yellow to both of us, however, my eyes might be seeing something diff than you, but we'd still both agree its yellow

BackSlash, wrong. Have you ever met anybody who was partially color blind? I have, and they know it. They know cause they can't tell the difference between two colors and somebody else can. As for completely different colors? No again, we're all human beings and in general we have the same eye makeup. The colors hit all our eyes the same, and interpretes the colors in a predictable fashion - unless a doctor tells you otherwise.

Nice attempt of sounding deep though.

wow, it's so funny to read this right now, i mean who hasnt thought of this before, i have, and i explain it to people and they think im crazy.
I wonder if animals interpret colors differently, as in shades or just totally different colors than us. it also depends on the animal and sorts i guess.

unreal, good call moving this topic. though, like everything that starts off serious, it is turning silly

i've wondered about the colors thing too, i mean after someone else mentioned it. About what SR said, I am not sure I understand why it wouldn't make sense? I mean if it was the brain that interpeted it differently, then the eyes wouldn't have to be different. I guess the blending of colors might make people notice, but i haven't thought about it enough. Like if someone says "blue like the sky" you see the sky and say "oh." So everything else that looks the same color as the sky is blue. I think they were saying this same thing but I am not seeing how it wouldn't work.

Also, with the zooming in, the making the "pixels" bigger makes sense, but just how small would these "pixels" be? And it seems like if there are a sort of pixels, they have to be able to fit right against each other, unless you didn't really mean pixels just make things bigger. crazyness...
