Environmentalists are protesting Dell's use of prison inmates for their computer recycling program, accusing the company of creating a "high-tech chain gang."

The protestors claim that Dell is using the prisoners because they are not protected by OSHA, the Occupational Health and Safety Administration, and therefore can work under more hazardous conditions. They also say the prisoners use up jobs.

Dell agrees that using prisoners saves the company money, which is passed on to their customers who do not have to pay fees to have old computers recycled. They say that the prisoners' workplace conforms to OSHA standards, however.
