Reports recently made public in the U.K., show that British intelligence believed the U.S. was in the planning stages of an invasion that would include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi in 1973 to seize oil fields.

An intelligence committee report said the U.S. was angered over the Arab nations' oil embargo, adding that seizing oil fields in those nations was "the possibility uppermost in American thinking."

The embargo caused huge price surges in petroleum products in the West.

The committee predicted a 10-year occupation of the Middle East which would completely alienate the Arab world as Western powers developed alternative energy.
