The International Atomic Energy Agency (IEAEA) reported today that Libya had imported enriched uranium and had produced small quantities of plutonium as part of its secret project to develop nuclear weapons.

The Libyans would have required about 10 kg (22 pounds) of plutonium to actually produce a true nuclear device but the IAEA's statement that they were in possession of 'small' quantities suggests that they probably only had a few grams.

The design and operation of a centrifuge had been studied but not developed, added the UN watchdog, but with the help of Pakistans nuclear expert Abdul Qadeer Khan their program could have progressed much further given time.
