The Chinese government has expanded its censorship control to cover text messages sent on cell phones. New laws have been issued to allow service providers to filter messages for "pornographic or fraudulent" content.

Analysts think the real target is political speech. Dissidents are at risk, they say, as China gradually tightens its control over all forms of electronic communications, the Internet in particular.

Paris-based Reporters Without Borders says China is using technology to control information, citing a company that says it is watching for "false political rumours" and "reactionary remarks." Certain keyword triggers automatically alert police.
