Ok, here's my problem. The past few days my computer has decided to develop a mind of it's own, and piss me off. It does this weird thing. Whenever I'm in the middle of doing something it suddenly goes into "sleep" mode, and the only way to get it to come out is to unplug it and plug it back in. WTF? It's pissing me off. It's not like my computer is idle or anything so it shouldn't do that, and it should "wake up" when I move the mouse. Any ideas?

1. Disable Hybernation: Right Click on your desktop, choose the Screen Saver tab, Click Power, Click the hybernate tab, deselect HyberNation and hit OK.

2. Disable Auto-System Standby: Right Click on your desktop, choose the Screen Saver tab, Click Power, Click the Power Schemes tab, set everything to never (I like having monitor set to 20 minutes). hit ok

The "advanced" tab in power management also has some options for pressing the sleep/power button.

Lol, what keys are you pressing when it's doin this... Anything happening just as it happens? what programs are running (hit control alt delete and click the process tab)...

some machines have their power modes setup in bios. my thinkpad a21e has suspend and hibernate options in its bios (i disabled them all on mine). it could be that....
also some "modern" keyboards have sleep and standby buttons on them. you aren't hitting those by accident??

Gizzy--I'm never pressing the same thing. It just happens randomly, a lot lately. I dunno. It just suddenly stops goes into what is apparently "hibernate" and won't wake the [censored] back up no matter what I do. I can't do the ctrl alt del thing when it happens, because the screen turns off and it won't do anything unless I unplug it.

Bob--my keyboard has the little button, but it's way up in the right hand corner and I never touch it. Even if I did it should come back to life when I wiggle the mouse or press enter.

This is a new problem, dunno what the deal is.

Could be...dun dun dun...spyware! You never know. Try Spybot or Adaware if the above suggestions don't work.

It could also be hardware based...mostly your processor, try re-seating it and make sure your heatsink isnt on backwards

if it isn't hibernation or standyby it could be like what happened to my pc. mine had this problem where it randomly rebooted, it wasn't limited to XP either. when i booted it into linux it still did it. there was no high processor usage or anything like that. it just did it randomly.

i thought it might of been the processor but before i forked out 40 for a new processor i thought i would swap the psu. it hasn't happened since. i think i might have been drawing a bit to much power (or not enough) because the other psu is fine. i have that running my webserver which is on 24/7 and it hasn't rebboted once since.

dash-- ran spybot, adaware, hijack this, and xoftspy and still nothing. I'm attempting a reformat cuz that's my "easy fix" but it's not being very easy this time. frown

Had the same problem, and in my case it was the power source.

power source....care to elaborate? How'd you fix it? This is me you're talking to remember. wink

If it's a power supply issue you'd have to replace the power supply.

ThinkGeek has a good (and cheap) power supply tester (you can give it to me when you're done with it too wink at:
