Accessing Win2k shares from Win98 - 08/12/02 12:40 PM
A good while back I asked a question concerning this. For some reason, when I tried to connect to my Win2k computer from my roommates Win98 laptop, it would prompt me for a password. The username was some strange thing that could not be changed. I tried all the user passwords on this computer but could not connect.
This is NOT the problem when connecting to a Win2k share from another Win2k. Instead, you'd be prompted for both a username AND password. In that event, you can specify any valid username and password to login.
Nobody had an answer for me, and people like Gizmo even mentioned that they had the same problem. Well, finally I have the anwer.
Take the username and password that you use to login to the network with Win98. Setup that same account on the Win2k you're trying to connect to. Then you should be able to view the shares without even a password prompt! Just make sure that the user the Win98 is logged in with exists on the Win2k you're connecting to.
