hey i was looking for some help. i just got my new laptop and i am able to pick up wireless internet connections. i do have a wireless router and i am able to pick up that signal, and i noticed that their are other people on my street that have wireless as well but to get access to theirs i need a password. when i search for a wireless network around theirs says "security-enabled wireless network" and mine says "unsecured wireless network". what i was wondering was how do i get mine to say the "security - enabled" with the whole password protection so that even i have to type in the password. i just hate how people are now able to pick up my wireless connection and feed off of my internet. well thank you in advance. if it makes a difference i am running Windows xp pro version 2002 sp2 on my home pc and on my laptop windows xp home ed. version 2002 sp2. thank you again

You will have to log onto the router, and enable the one of the following :

WEP - Wired Equivalency Privacy
(Which has known security weaknesses)

WPA - Wi-Fi Protected Access
(Which is more secure)

For extra security you can enable MAC filtering, so that only the systems with the MAC's that you identify can use the connection.

Exactly how to do set these up depends on exactly what router you are using, but presumably, you would just go to the wireless tab on your router and then the security tab, but like I said the exact details depend on the router you are using, tutorials can be found by googling your router.

I use MAC filtering with WPA2 Personal; my PDA requires WEP only which pisses me off cas I can't use it on my network :'(...

Myself I have a WRT54GS v1.0 running the Sveasoft Talisman 1.2 firmware.

A couple people here use the same firmware on their WRT54Gx's.

I would like to use the Sveasoft Talisman firmware but I have a

WRT54G V5.0 which apparently is not good for 3rd party firmware

So I now use

DD-WRT micro generic, its the only 3rd party firmware that I could find that works with v5.0, I like it, lots of features and what not

Yeh the WRT54G v5 uses a differant processor and a prepritary firmware; you should go buy a WRT54GL; they're the same as a WRT54G v4.

Myself I'm dedicated to Sveasoft, whent hey do more work on their micro build and if it supports the G v5 I'll give you a holler...

BTW, wtf have you been, your [censored] dissapears all the time lol
