I have a win2k machiene and a win xp machiene i wanna setup it so i can browse the files on each computer from the other one.. I made a network with the winxp machiene and it told me to make a floppy i did and tried to install it on win2k and it says its only for win98, me, etc so how do i setup the xp and 2k togeather?

Uhm, if you only want to browse trough the other computer his harddrive, there is no need for a floppy. Just share the drive (folder) you want to share. Right click on it and choose share. I think yuo can figure out the rest.

Oh and the access the files from another comp, just do a \\computername\namesharedfolderordrive

I hope this means you just want filesharing between your 2 comps cause you're talking about an internet sharing prog in your previous post.

You must have an account as the user your logged in as on the machine your trying to access. Also make sure you have netbios installed on both machines especially the XP one I think the home version doesent have it installed by default.

Maybe I was premature in de-stickying the "Correct Forums" post. Moved to Newbie Questions.

Win2000 isn't the most compatable with sharing... In other words on your win2k box if you can ever get the filesharing to work correctly you're a god... they were seriously paranoid when they made the design schematics.

cool, from what gizmo sais, i'm a god laugh

And Gizmo must not have read my post describing how to work with the tight security of Win2k shares. I am a teacher of gods!

Is it possible to send messeges with a basic Windows network?
Posted By: sinetific Re: Network Help - 08/27/02 06:01 AM
use "net send (machine name or IP) message"
thats only if both have netbios installed and the port 139 open.
Posted By: psychogen Re: Network Help - 08/29/02 01:21 PM
thats from the command prompt

/me points at sinetific

to view all machines on network type 'net view'
to do anything with 'net' type 'net' and it will give u all options and usage types.

And by default on win2k machines upwards this service is open, most admins dont bother closing the port.

Someone once told me that xp isn't the os of choice to put on a network/server anyways. It doesn't seem too different from other mswindows releases (95-98 + ME) A few added features like task managers and such seems to be the only difference apart from the gui. I don't know ... I'm just rambling here. What's up with the xp networking ability anyways? I don't know much about windows networking, except for novell, as you may notice. aaaaah whatever. Why would people want to use a windows network anyways? I don't get it. oh well. I'll be logging out now.
