Since I can't post a poll, I'll just ask. How many CDs have you bought since you discovered you could get music for free through filesharing clients and IRC?

I still buy music, but I use Kazaa to assure myself of the quality before I buy it. I mean, I wouldn't wanna buy a Metallica CD thinking it was good. (Just kidding guys) I've bought 8 CDs in the past year, that I can remember.

Hmm, this might sound strange in this world but i don't use file sharing programs as kazaa or some irc channels, I do still buy music, last cd was wednesday last week, and how many cds i have bought since the enormous growth of file sharing programs, no idea actually.
Posted By: pergesu Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/02/03 01:16 PM
I never bought CDs before filesharing. I bought a couple since, but I mostly get my music off of some program. I'd hear somethin on the radio and decide I'd like to have it, so I'd get it online. Before filesharing, I just wouldn't buy CDs. Copy em from friends and stuff.
Posted By: thebluegiant Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/02/03 01:27 PM
Around 130.
I use filesharing programs and have downloaded quite a few songs, but if I like the music enough I buy the album. Even if the artist gets barely any money from the album, the record company will keep them on since the records sell.
I hate giving money to those assholes, but if it keeps musicians that I like making music . . .

Although about 1/3 of the CD's I bought were from independent labels, so that's fine with me.

I'm glad to hear it. Alot of my friends haven't bought any CDs at all in the past year because they download them instead. I hope those RIAA bastards don't get their way. I'll have to buy CDs blindly or just stop buying them altogether, except on the rare occaision one of my friends has an awesome CD I haven't heard.
Posted By: ObiWan Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/02/03 04:47 PM
If anything file sharing had peaked my interest in purchasing CD's, it has by no means decreased the number of CD's I buy.
Posted By: Ghost Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/02/03 06:31 PM
file sharing makes me buy more cds
Posted By: unreal Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 12:42 AM
I'm with tbg...I'll download a few songs, and if I like the music, I'll buy the CD.
Posted By: Crime Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 12:46 AM
yes, i suggest everyone download metallica's ST. Anger, then pass it out to all your friends. SCREW YOU LARS !

i think ive bought like 50 cds in this year, mostly because my cds got stolen/lost. but why pay for music when you can get it for free ? :p
Posted By: unreal Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 12:48 AM
yeh, but if you just stopped kicking Lars' [censored] all the time, maybe they wouldn't keep sending Kirk to steal your [censored]. Dumbass.
Posted By: Cold Sunn Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 01:21 AM
My rule for buying a cd before file sharing was if I hear at least 2 songs off it, and they are all good, I buy it. Now, I just download alot of the band's songs and buy whichever cd seems the best. Becoming X by Sneaker Pimps is next.

Does anyone know when Wreckage by Overseer comes out? I've seen a few different release dates, and some places (amazon) saying it hasn't been released yet. It is sure to be a badass cd.
Posted By: jonconley Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 03:18 AM
Not so much after filesharing, but after the RIAA's behavior. Since then I have not bought a single CD and probably will not.

Unless it is:
Indepedent
2nd Hand (CD Warehouse)
Internet Album (www.prickmusic.com)

I am going to give as little money as possible to those people that have treated the customers and consumers like total [censored] with a large lack of regard for them.
Posted By: SilentRage Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 01:59 PM
I never have, and never will buy an audio CD. Audio CD's just don't have enough music. Custom burned MP3 CD's is the wave of the future.
Posted By: Ghost Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 06:39 PM
mini disk all the way
Posted By: dashocker Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 07:25 PM
I don't use filesharing to preview CDs or anything like that. Just check the CD out at Yahoo and listen to the song samples, much easier/faster than downloading a CD. I do download music if the band is no longer together/active though, otherwise you are just supporting the record companies and the artist gets nothing. Of course, I tend to break my own rules sometimes...

P.S. Ghost: mini disc pwns j00! Catch me in IRC again and we'll discuss...
Posted By: Cold Sunn Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/03/03 10:44 PM
Yeah dash you are right the artist gets nothing except money from the record company. Also, instead of hearing a 30 second clip you could get a full length near cd quality mp3. Just my opinion.
Posted By: Imperial Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/05/03 01:26 AM
thank god for filesharing....remember back in the day when you'd hear their single on the radio, buy the cd and then everything BUT their single sucked? Yeah well that used to happen to me all the time.

Now I just use the fact that I dislike the RIAA and that the artist makes no money to rationalize my theft, but so do the rest of you. But hopefully, stealing from them will actually put them out of business.

Anyway, THIS disearves a bump

and cold sunn: hit me up on aim sometime (Imperial TPF) we seem to have a lot in common

That article was a good read, but I disagree with him a little. He talks about economy, how we should spend less instead of more, like the only reason to spend more is your morals. But, he says the RIAA should make less, like it's their moral obligation. Not that those [censored] deserve any more money, I'm just saying. I think 1.40 is too low, but the price of CDs is too high. I know the artist gets very little of my cash when I buy their CD, but like someone said: at least it keeps em making music.

I do still buy CDs, but I also think the RIAA takes it in the [censored]. How about someone makes a program to save a save a short mp3 of someone saying "[censored] the RIAA" over and over again, as [censored] the RIAA0001.mp3? Let's say, 4000 times. Then, we put them in our shared directory and turn sharing on. Maybe it will attract their attention and piss them off and we'll all be sued....nevermind.
Posted By: thebluegiant Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/05/03 01:24 PM
It costs pennies to make a CD, less than a cassette, actually. 18 dollars is [censored] highway robbery.
Posted By: BackSlash Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/05/03 08:06 PM
i have bought one cd in the last year, and it was used. i discovered that windowsmedia.com allows you to listen to full length songs of most artists for free, and legally. though some of the links don't work, and some of the sound quality is below par, it is still a simple and fast way to sample music. and i must agree with dash and ghost that mini discs are quite cool. i recently bought a mini disc cd burner, worth my money.
Posted By: Gremelin Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/06/03 03:36 AM
I have bought CD's... well, CDR's :x...
Posted By: dashocker Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/07/03 12:48 AM
hmm, BS, I think you are referring to those tiny CD-R's? I believe Ghost and I were referencing the MiniDisc format. Check out www.minidisc.org or www.minidisct.com. As for CS, are you really determined to piss me off? Well, congratulations, you did! Listen bish, if the artist is dead do you think the record comapny sends the money to the family or something? I don't think so. If the group is disbanded, where does the money go from CD sales then, smart [censored]? Oh boy, I can spend 20 minutes downloading a CD and get near CD quality! What a waste of time! Listening to samples is much easier/faster. As BS said, when on a broadband connection, just go to a place like windowsmedia or launchcast and listen to the whole song.

calm down dashocker. Cold Sunn is one of the few respectable people at this site who never seems to flame anybody. First he said you were right, then he made a comment on his slightly differing opinion. What is there to be pissed off about? Don't answer that question, it was rhetorical.

*looks around and sees himself in the spotlight*

oh, um... yeah. May Alah seek veangance on the evil RIAA for our suffering. Praise Alah for CD-R's and um... Death to infidels.

I realize that SR, however it seemed liked sarcasm to me. Maybe I'm wrong, and if I am, I apologize for being an [censored].

hah, my iPod survived 10 minutes in the washing machine. My dad threw my shorts in (I've done my laundry since I was 11, and this is why) and didn't check the pockets. I looked for my shorts, he said he was doin laundry, and I ran over to the washing machine, pulled out my iPod. Wiped it off... turned it on, and it was workin fine. The only thing is that the decals on the back came off, and the foam that goes on the ear buds got ruined.

i still buy cds... mostly cuz if i really like an artist i'll pay for their music. but if i only like a few songs, i'm not gonna buy the whole album. or if a new album comes out, i download it first. don't want to waste the money on something shitty. i listen to it, if it's good i'll buy it. if it sucks [censored] i delete it. if it's moderate... i still won't buy it. i'm a cheap [censored]

Hey, [censored] you.

who the hell buys anything let alone cd's..
Posted By: Poor Boy Re: After Filesharing, Did You Buy CDs? - 07/24/03 04:27 PM
oh in case no one noticed, im new wink
HELL MOTHERFUCKING YEAH.

I love buying music. Even if it does cost 20$ a CD after tax. I get the liner notes, bonus tracks and that crisp sound.

I have downloded music, listend to it and if it's hot, I'll often pursue getting it.

The RIAA is out of their minds. I work for a patent trademark lawyer and she says "It looks like they have a case."

How the [censored] do you figure a song someone shared costs them 100 gs?

Anyhoo .... yes, I have and will continue to buy music in Tower Records like the rest of the robotic shleps out there......
