P2P service Kazaa has been handed an ultimatum by an Australian court, saying the service must filter out copyrighted music by the 5th of December, or close its service down for good. Kazaa was found of breaching copyright in September (SN reported).

Sharman Networks, which operates Kazaa, has appealed September's ruling, however music industry officials say that Australian courts are staying tough, and insisting on a keyword filter on the Kazaa platform within 10 days.

IFPI Chairman John Kennedy said: "It's time for services like Kazaa to move on -- to filter, go legal or make way for others who are trying to build a digital music business the correct and legal way." IFPI is a music industry trade group.
