Microsoft Corp. is putting efforts into attracting Japanese users for its new Xbox 360 game console, seeking to avoid the lack of appeal that dogged sales of the earlier version of the machine in the world's second-largest game market.

The world's largest software maker revealed on Monday 45 game titles to be available for Japanese users of the new console, scheduled to go on sale in time for the year-end holiday shopping season before market leader Sony's planned launch of its new PlayStation 3 early in 2006.

A shortage of games to draw Japan's discerning and sophisticated users was the main reason behind the lack of success of the current generation Xbox.

"I've always said that Japan is a vitally important market for the Xbox platform," Peter Moore, Microsoft's vice president in charge of Xbox marketing, said at an event to introduce upcoming games for the console.

"I know that the success in this country is the ultimate tribute to the compelling power of our new platform," he said.

This time, Microsoft said 38 publishers, including Square Enix Co. Ltd., Electronic Arts Inc., and Namco Ltd., are developing 45 game titles. More than 100 other titles are being worked on.

Microsoft said in May it won a deal to feature Square Enix's popular "Final Fantasy" games, which up until now had been a cornerstone for Sony. Sony controls more than two-thirds of the game console market with its PlayStation series.

Square Enix's chief executive Yoichi Wada told Reuters in May that the company had decided to develop a Final Fantasy game for the Xbox 360 after Microsoft agreed to allow users to play against opponents connected via personal computers in addition to other Xboxes.

Microsoft has also said it offered game publishers a bigger cut of the proceeds from game sales and hired key executives from within the gaming industry to court developers.

The company has already announced plans to launch the console this year in the United States ahead of the holiday season, which begins in late November.

It had previously said Japanese and European launches would follow within six weeks. It declined to reveal the exact date of the launch and the console price.

Microsoft's new white-and-silver concave console will feature three PowerPC-based microprocessors joined onto one chip to deliver powerful computing and advanced graphics, as well as a detachable 20-gigabyte hard drive and a wireless controller.

"With this next generation, Japan is right at the center of the Xbox 360 universe," Microsoft's Moore said. "This time the rest of the world is starting to realize that the Xbox 360 is a real contender right here in Japan."

call me biased, but il never turn to the XBox.
its not that i dnt think the system is good (if not, great), its just a surreal loyalty i have to Sony and the playstation series.

Its one thing for microsoft conering the computer/palmtop market, but to give them the ability to control CONSOLE gaming as well?

just doesnt feel right.

i supported nintendo and purchased the DS 'cos they were the be all and end all of hand held gaming.
i (or my gf) supported Sony when they came out with the PSP because all it is, is merely an extension of the playstation and i am a playstation supporter.
and i support microsoft with their software (ie: unlike the norm down here in australia, iv paid for my copy of windows xp and iv registered it.)

all in all, everyones gotten a little richer off me.
but to expect me to support a move short of global domination in entertainment technology?...

nay.

Well, there IS a reason for me to buy it now wink ...

From what I've seen design wise it's an odd looking console; but 'eh I guess if it comes with good games I wouldn't have a problem in a purchase...
u play FinalFantasy on the ps2 giz?

the gaming engine fully utilised the ps2's capability during the cut scenes and sometimes even during battle.

heres something to encourage people NOT getting the XBox360: ->Click Me<-

EndGame, do you honestly think Microsoft isn't going to have it's fair share of suprises for thsoe developing? That's a pretty weak argument, and [censored] like that will never talk me out of buying a 360. wink
I haven't played anything newer than FFX; I absolutely love FF though hehe... There are a few games that will always draw me in:
Final Fantasy
Zelda
Mario
Splinter Cell

wink ..
I wasn't impressed with the xbox and found halo2 disapointing. Nintendo seems to be holding on to its hand held consoles but I think it will die out with Sony and Microsoft now pacing for dominance.

Like Gizmo, I too will invest in the xbox360 just because of a ff game. And maybe even the SP3 when it comes out in Aus.

Do you guys think that we are moving away from using the PC for gaming? I read this opinion from the AOE3 website.
I donno, I think PC gaming will always be around in one form or another; I think we're moving closer to having the option of playing the game via a PC or Console on a multiplayer level; which I'm definately hoping for (and that is what FF will first bring us)...

I doubt that PC GAming will ever die out in all honesty; but some games do still belong on a console...

na, never thought ms would take the ps3 lying down.
like i said, its an almost peverse loyalty to Sony that im trying to discourage everyone on the boards purchasing the xbox360, no matter how week or even desperate an argument may be.

(/me hides cheque just received from sony) wink
EndGame, you don't get an opinion on this; you threw your PSP on the ground...
