Inboxes battered by Trojan spam deluge - 01/19/07 07:23 PM

Virus writers have taken advantage of the winter storms tearing through Northern Europe. The attack is fairly simple. The user gets an email attempting to trick them into opening an attachment containing a Trojan horse virus. Email eye grabbing subject lines like "230 dead as storm batters Europe" are used to grab the users attention. The infectious attachments contain the Small-DAM (AKA DwnLdr-FYD) Trojan. Attachments have had the following filenames thus far: Full Clip.exe; Full Story.exe; Read More.exe and Video.exe.

If executed, the payload turns infected machines into compromised, zombie clients under the control of hackers. The attack was discovered by F-Secure's Security Labs in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Two in every three malware reports on Friday were reported to be Trojan related. For wider penetration the emails are now said to come with other subjects such as "British Muslims Genocide", "Naked teens attack home director", "A killer at 11, he's free at 21 and kill again!" and "US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has kicked German Chancellor Angela Merkel".
