I mean physically adding a PC or network to the internet.

Example:

proper web server
DNS server (for the web server, Network)
router (will route too a network, IPs For DNS) but I'm talking RIP here <img border="0" alt="[!]" title="" src="graemlins/!.gif" />

SO what do you need?

A fast connection to the net with good upload (What would that be) ?
Any PC @ least fast enough not to slow down the network and to act as the router.
And is that all ? Do you have to publish yourself like to the iSP you use, or the country routers or smtg ?

I hope u understand what I mean in "being a part of the internet" wink

Dude, just find an ISP that offers a line for servers. Set up a computer/server on that line and your connected to the internet. Telus offers really fast DSL lines for servers if u live in Canada. Maybe I'm reading your question wrong, but this is all I can see that you are asking.

Easiest way would be to dedicate a box with 2 network cards to be your server, get on a DSL or Cable connection (or higher if you can afford) then plug from your modem to your top nic on your server, then from the bottom nic to the "uplink" on a hub.

I'd reccommend going with Sygate Home Network as the connection sharing software (windows based) (get a crack at astalavista for unlimited users).

You'd set the bottom nics info as say:
IP: 90.0.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

then for your others set them as:
IP: 90.0.0.x (x being 2,3,4,5,6,7,8+)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0

then all of your computers will bounce from the server to the net. Its easy enough.

If your server is going to have connection sharing open for your network you'd definetely need a firewall.

On mine I also have a virus scanner (Norton 2002) and an FTP client.

I hope that this answers your questions,
