i dont think that would work, what you CAN do is partition it laugh

If you have an extra hard drive I'd put *nix on it. But if you don't have another one. Don't bother getting another one. Have you searched on google on for info on how to partition???? Different distros have different ways of partitioning, soooo yeah...here, look:

Just start with redhat or mandrake to learn use thier installation partition tools. I have installed Linux about 30 times trying to get it right. Never did I lose any data in windows.

you might want to try and create a new partition with DOS fdisk first, before you do it, defrag and clean up your disk, see how much space you have and resize that partition accordingly. If you do it right you might be able to repartition the drive with no data loss. Now that you have the drive split into 2, go ahead and install, format and do whatever you need to the 2nd partition.

Ya know, they make partition magic for kids just like you... I'm taking it that you have kazaa, so go get it, defrag, run it, repartition install your distro, you're set.

BTW, I'm running XP Pro SP1 on this box...

Haha...I'm sorry, but I like CK correcting spelling. I hate it when people misspell left and right. smile
Posted By: SilentRage Re: 2 os's on 1 hd - 09/18/02 01:04 PM
I think it's a waste of time, but I did find it hilarious that CK had to correct him TWICE. heh

BTW, its OS', not OS'S...
Posted By: pergesu Re: 2 os's on 1 hd - 09/21/02 11:04 PM
Actually, it would be OSes. That's the plural. OS' is the plural possessive form of OS.

I also suggest looking into boot magic, its a nice gui boot prompt which allows you to chose which partation to boot from. And yes, use partation magic instead of fdisk, for people who don't know how to use fdisk they can totally [censored] over the computers. And you don't really want to have to send it back to the company to have them fix it? do you?
If you have some spare cash, i suggest that you just go out and find an old computer you can install it on. I currently have linux installed on a p200 with 84 meg of ram. It works wonderfully in the command shell. and it cost me 100 bux to put it together. And i can use both of my machines at one time.

Skull

well i think you should consider your HDD space.
it's maybe a good idea to make a partiotion and run unix there. Or get another one man.

i think what you should wory about is the Installation, it usually makes problems.
Posted By: LivingDead Re: 2 os's on 1 hd - 09/27/02 12:00 AM
ya i got a 100ghd and 3g ram
Posted By: black^Pimp Re: 2 os's on 1 hd - 09/27/02 06:29 AM
than you have enough space, make a partition and run *nix in one of them, so you'll have to os's on 1 hd, definitely make a partition, you've got enough space.

But as i said before, what you really need to wory about is the installation if you are a newbie to *nix. Now let's not make a big deal out of this, but a lots of people have problems during installation, it all depends of your comp.
