ive been a windows guy my whole pc life up until this point. ive installed countless dual boots only to never chose linux.

i finally built a dedicated linux box with a new amd64 2800+. i plan on installing slackware 10 since this is my favorite distro due to its simple installer and command driven nature.

what are the tools i should have? i would like to know what you guys think so I can start getting them and reading up on them.

i am a newb here so any info is helpful.

tools?

sniffers, compilers, loggers, scanners, firewalls, etc

ethereal for sniffing also get tcpdump. stick with gcc for compiling but also get nasm for assembly. nmap is probably one of the best scanners out there so go with that.

i'm not sure about any of the others....
