NEW ORLEANS -- An 8-year-old girl was suspended for nine days for bringing to school what appeared to be about 30 "Jell-O shots" -- though it was unclear whether they contained alcohol.

The incident occurred Nov. 29, as the girl stood after classes outside Geraldine Boudreaux Elementary School in Terrytown, a New Orleans suburb. A teacher spotted liquid dripping out of the student's bookbag and found what looked like the small cups of alcohol-laced gelatin that are sold in bars, schools spokesman Jeff Nowakowski said.

The girl told the principal that her mother, who works in a bar, makes alcoholic shots at home and sells them at work. The fourth-grader said her mother had instructed her to take the shots to school and sell them, three for $1, to make some money for Christmas, Nowakowski said.

The gelatin was turned over to the sheriff's department for testing to see if it contained alcohol.

The girl was suspended for violating school rules against possessing or trying to distribute a "lookalike," or something that appears to contain drugs or alcohol.

Under the lookalike rule, the girl's suspension will stand no matter what the sheriff's department finds.

"The school system's position is, it doesn't matter if it had alcohol in it or not," Nowakowski said.

The names of the girl and her mother were not released.

The mother must also allow school officials to test her daughter's hair for signs of drug use, Nowakowski said.

Well, they have rules now against even "look alike" substances, so i guess they consider look alike jello shots like real jello shots. I love it when the government protects us from us.

The drug test sounds like BS. I mean, she didn't appear to be under the influence of any drugs. Hell, they only have the jello. Which, regardless of lookalike rules, still ends up being only jello. So what you are saying is any child whose mother has a semi-questionable hobby or occupation, should be subjected to a drug test by the school.

BULLSHIT

edit: btw, where the hell can you get jello-shots for 3 for a dollar? Would you even make your money back.

"This country is way too strict, I can't even find ponochie (<---his word for pussy i guess i dunno) around here even if I am willing to pay for it. In mexico you can just [censored] whoever you want. 10, 12, 14 year olds no one cares"

hahaha! ...sorry.....

That's [censored] sad, suspended for bringing jello to school; if anything it's a solicitation violation but then again kids have been selling the crap that schools give them for years (candy drives, jerkey drives, etc); they're just pissed because they're not getting a cut.

Does it even matter if they are, in fact, alcoholic jello shots? The girl is 8 years old - she doesn't know about alcohol, she doesn't know about drugs, she doesn't have any kind of judgment in this area. She was just being a good kid and did what her mother told her to. The messed up thing about this is that the school is punishing the little girl, rather than trying to help her out, because she's the one being hurt here, not the one at fault.

Amen perg. This girl clearly needs help, not a suspension. All a suspension does is ruin her chances for a better future...at least in a small way. The mother is the one at fault, most likely. These zero tolerance policies, especially for frikin elementary kids, are probably one of the biggest burdens to our school system and the juvenile system in general.

That is the problem with any governing system. They have to keep making rules to make job security. Eventually you get to where rules are just not needed.

Zero tolerance is also harmful in teaching kids how to deal with life. Think about the message this sends. That you can make broad assumptions about things. That single rules can cover all bases. This poor kid. 8 years old and the school treats her like a drug dealer. EVERYONE FEAR OUR CHILDREN. THEY ARE NOT THE KIDS OF YESTERDAY. THEY ARE ALL OUT TO BRING US DOWN. THEY ARE ALL DRUG PUSHING, SEX HAVING, FOUL MOUTH TERRORISTS. LETS TREAT THEM AS IF THEY WERE ALL REPEAT OFFENDERS. LETS COME DOWN ON THEM HARDER THAN OUR LEAGLE SYSTEM WOULD FOR SMALL INFRACTIONS. GET THEM BEFORE THEY GET US.
