St. Petersburg College Professor Matt Basham has been making suggestions on improving their training manuals to Cisco Systems for a number of years. His suggestions have all been ignored, so he has now released online his own free 800 page manual.

Basham said: "Cisco's curriculum is fine, but we needed something different to get students ready for work in the real world". His manual utilises techniques in publishing that hold promise to provide students with alternatives to expensive texts.

College freshmen spend an average of $900 on texts prompting some members of Congress to call for an investigation into textbook publishers pricing. Some states such as California and Georgia are already looking into this issue.
