Yeh, this happens a lot; a lot of people get tons of these checks each month (my mother for example has her resume publicly posted with email and address and she gets about 8 per month).

It's just a scam...

Just keep in mind, if it's too good to be true, it's often a scam... Honestly, in this day and age, who would send you $2000+ and expect you to give them money back... I mean, why wouldn't they just withdraw their money from their own account :P...
