Podcasts?...

I was approached several months back by someone, I'm not sure who it was, but it may have been JC... I've given the idea of doing a podcast much more thought in recent times but the question is content...

So I ask you, if you wanted to check out a podcast, what type of content would you want to hear? A general Q&A? What topics?

I'm up to just about anything, though I do need to find a new mic... I would even be interested in a videocast (eventually) to accompany...

What're your thoughts?

Excellent idea! When I joined (I think it was almost a year ago) I had just begun to explore the world of hacking. Now, after billions and billions of hours worth of reading (sounds like the evolution theory) I've discovered video tutorials and discussions to be MUCH more convenient and interesting. Also after the fifth energy drink, it's hard to concentrate on reading...

My vote is Q&A and demonstrations of system tweaks or network tweaks to improve performance. Also, I'd be willing to donate some to help with the basic hardware (mic, cam) just to have a small portion of your knowledge available on video.

Hope to hear an update on this subject!

(I'm an idiot..) So I didn't join this forum like a year ago, and if I would have taken the moment to look RIGHT BELOW MY NAME I would have realized I registered in October of last year. XD

Just wanted to correct that myself before someone else beat me to it.

In my defense, it's been a long seven months?

<snicker> well, there are two mic's I've been looking at; one is a "speaker" mic that covers the room, and one is a "personal" mic...

Then a webcam, hey if you want to buy me a new one to replace the one I just broke np :x... Perhaps a little USB Hub wink...

My casting wishlist on newegg is comprised of:

Well, the Labtech mic seems to have a great review and the other mics seem really low quality. Webcam seems worthwhile. I'll help with these two items, but the USB Hub you'll have to sucker some other newbie into. XD

PM me a PayPal account to send to or upload one of those "donate here" thingy's you had for that server upgrade that one time...

Don't spend a fortune on microphones and mixers. I've been doing a show for 2 years now, all on a crappy $15 karaoke mic and it sounds fine.

And in my opinion, an audio podcast is better than video. I think most people don't have time to sit down and watch video. But with audio, you can listen to it when you're driving, at the gym, or doing anything really.

I was actually contemplating doing both; posting video on youtube and streaming audio on site; both the same content, just different mediums; what do you think?

Yeah, that works. Nothing wrong with making it more accessible. I've been wanting to turn my audio stuff into YouTube stuff for a long time now, but I've been lazy about it.

I moved to Oregon at the end of 2005. I didn't know you were from here either. Do you ever go to 2600?

Lol, yeh, more accessible is key... Gr3ndel was going to help me with it, but he's going to MT for a ralley and won't be back for some time lol...

I'm in Milwaukie and rely on public transportation (with the price of gas, a car is all but useless), and don't get to head out to the Portland meetings since they moved them from Lloyd Center or Pioneer Place mall, now they're at a tech cafe down town and no one even shows up to the 2600 meetings lol...

I've ultimately been in OR my entire life, moved around a bit, but I prefer it here. I'm curious if I still have you on my IM lol...

I've been two four 2600 meetings in the 2.5 years I've lived here. At 2 of them, nobody was there. So that sucks, driving over an hour for nobody to show up.

It made much more sense for them to be at Pioneer Place Mall, in the food court... at least people had a choice of what to eat after a long days work, and then they could unwind... at backspace it's like they where trying to recreate "Hackers" lol...

i'd just as soon have you over for dinner than send you to a 2600 meeting lol

I'm an Orego too. When is the 2600 events anyway? I hadn't realized they were held in Portland. I'm in Eugene, so if something is going down in Portland, I'll drive up without a problem! I'm a PC Tech so I can choose when I get a day off. Or even just head up for the night after work (afterall, there's NOTHING going on in Eugene at night).

Let me know of any events or if someone just wants some company, I'm bored to death and I swear there are no hackers here (save one who put their mark on google hackers map, but doubt I'll accidentally cross paths with them).

Oh and on subject, yeah, you should do both video and just audio. That'd be ideal for mixed circumstances.

Our 2600 meets suck, they're not worth [censored]... they take over the meetings, and move them, then stop showing up for them altogether themselves...

I just as soon have you all over at my house for dinner; i have more equip anyhow :P

Well I'm exactly halfway between Portland and Eugene, so the candlelit dinner should clearly be at my house in huge metropolis of Albany. Because there's so much good public transportation into Albany.

Really though, maybe we should actually attend a 2600, then we wouldn't have to care if anyone else shows up. I think last time I went there, I just didn't wait around long enough because I was bored. These sites claim that there was a meeting:

http://pdx2600.blogspot.com/
http://2600pdx.maxmcs.com

Apparently some other guy was at the meeting too, but also couldn't find the 2600 people. It really is easier to pick out the computer geeks from a mall's food court than it is in a net cafe. The last 2600 I went to where I did find the meeting, there was at least 15 people there for it.

Wow, I sure know how to threadjack.

Do they even have a bus in albany? haha... I generally just drive through while on my way to Newport every so often; i stay long enough to piss on the side of a building then take off again lol...

'eh you're about the only one i'll not detour on a thread hijack lol; i added you to our vip forum if you wanted to talk in there though lol...

I bought and hosted 2600pdx.com at one point, and offered free hosting to the "coordinators", they told me to [censored] myself lol...

Their "official" webpage is down, I haven't been able to connect to it for a while lol... I haven't received anything from their "newsletter" in a while either lol... I just tried emailing the "coordinator" and got an email bounce... strange i say...

If I had a reliable way of getting down there and back on a friday night I'd probably go again lol... I know of several people who'd probably show if I got the word out... Mutany anyone? lol

Ok, seriously, it sounds like enough people are intersted, we should get together and conspire about something. And Albany sounds like a great idea! I love the wonderful smell that reminds me of a rose bed (that about fifteen rabbid dogs have recently crapped in), but the most.. driving force of Albany is.. hey I could save like a whole months rent in gas! I swear, is $4.36/gal even legal?!

Anyone tell me when/where and what to bring! As once before stated, I'm desparate to see some form of human life that doesn't view technology as a "environmental hazard". I swear there's only hippies in Eugene. Now if only they were hacker hippies (oh wait they are- mention hack here and everyone in unison pulls out their hackeysac and a joint)

Since you guys hate the 2600 meetings, we could always start up a BinRev meeting.

http://411.binrevmeetings.com/

They're typically on the 3rd Friday of each month. I know someone in Portland was doing them a year or two ago, but I'm not sure if they're still active. They were in another coffee shop/internet cafe. So maybe we should pick a place in Portland and start doing them monthly.

And we'll talk about podcasting a LOT at these meetings! (Just trying to stay on topic here...)

Let's do it. I don't know Portland at all, so you pick a place and send me an address to mapquest. What day to start?

Oh and Podcasting... forgot lol. So, has the hardware come in yet Gizmo?

Lol, I'd prefer a mall; possibly a bookstore to meet up at, possibly wander around... We have one of the largest Barnes and Noble's at Clackamas Town Centre... Since you're both out of the area it'd be the closest off of busy roads/freeway/highway, blady bladdy blah...

Lol I haven't ordered it yet; I've been working on where we'll house it and how I'm going to have everything *look*...

I've been meaning to do something with www.dotslashhack.com wink...

A mall or whatever is fine with me. Seems like that'd be the easiest place to bring in more people. How about the one that 2600 used to be in? I'll have to search Google some more tonight and make sure the old BinRev meetings actually disbanded.

The 2600 meetings where at several different malls; Lloyd Centre was the first, then Pioneer Place; but neither really have a good bookstore... Borders went out of business, so I don't even think Pioneer HAS a bookstore; and Lloyd Center is filthy...

Clackamas Town Center however was just renovated and has a ton of eateries as well as a gigantic Barnes and is right off of 205 wink

Working on web page [censored] right now; i was going an ajax route BUT the script i was using didn't work right on IE6, which is a big web browser contender; so I'm currently recoding one for compatibility reasons...

I have it so it'll parse videos properly though, so it's just UI work primarily...

Demo it here; I'm simply working on SYSTEM here and not really DESIGN; but feel free to give feedback on anything.

I just grabbed random videos from the different services, but they're there.

Heh, i screwed up the demo; it won't work at all in IE right now; going to have to narrow it down; but it works in FFox which makes it odd..

I've got it fixed, was an issue of when i tried to clean code; IE didn't like the shortened tag wink...

It's working now, and I have dropdown menu's to clean up the menubar; will definitely need a sitemap (HTML and XML) for both users and search engines.

I did a ton of updates on the UI at DSH, I've got most of the site section pages in place and am working on their systems.

I'm pretty satisfied with the design at this point since I settled on how I wanted the menu's to work so I'm still tinkering slightly wink
