SONY HAS stuck an interesting sentence into the very last line of a release that tells us the wonderful technological heights that the console will be able to aspire to. The company said: "The integrated Cell processor will be able to support a variety of operating systems (such as Linux or Apple's Tiger)."

In the upcoming age of online-enabled consoles with plenty of ports and capabilities for extra peripherals - a keyboard, for example it doesnt take a genius to spot where Sony might be going with this line of thought.

So, are future consoles a PC replacement? Well, at least a Mac replacement at this stage.

The company does mention just before that little bombshell that "Sony is expected to offer optional hard drives for the PS3 with potential memory capacity of 80 or 120 GB", meaning that the HD space is there for computer replacements.

Interesting strategy.
