The first of a new generation of Global Positioning System satellites was launched aboard a Delta 2 rocket on Sunday. The Lockheed Martin-built satellite has better protection against jamming, stronger signal strength and also has more frequencies.
“I think this it’s a pretty huge step,” said Col. Allan Ballenger, of the GPS Program. “The military has been using two frequencies from day one of GPS. This will be first time that we are adding a second frequency for civilian users.”
