The US government is reportedly investigating technology to block sunlight as an "important insurance" against climate change fueled by rising emissions and is asking world scientists to develop the technology.
Options being considered include giant space mirrors and pumping reflective dust into the atmosphere. According to scientists reflecting 1% of sunlight could cancel out all greenhouse emissions since the industrial revolution.
The US government, while accepting that the planet will increase in temperature by up to 5.8 degrees this century with a 90% probability that humans are to blame, is pushing for voluntary instead of binding agreements on emission reduction.
